DESCRIPTION

The Geosciences Research Division (GRD) is home to a diverse set of academics and staff whose interests cover a wide variety of topics in the atmospheric, marine and solid Earth sciences. In many cases, these topics are cross-disciplinary but they include essential components of the following core themes: the geochemistry of the solid, liquid and gaseous Earth, cosmochemistry (meteorites, asteroids and other planetary bodies), paleoceanography and paleoclimate, stratigraphy and sedimentology, geobiology and paleoecology, global and regional tectonics, paleomagnetism and hydrogeology. Research activities encompass modeling studies, laboratory experiments, and field-based expeditions, including ship-time, with GRD members taking full advantage of the extensive research facilities on offer within the division and at SIO.

This position is jointly based in the Schartup and Aarons laboratories, both of which use geochemical tools to analyze trace metals in environmental samples. Under supervision and guidance, assist in wide ranging laboratory research work such as purification of clean lab vessels and sample processing under clean lab conditions. Processing and analysis of seawater, fish and sediment samples using trace metal clean techniques. Responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records of geochemistry and data analysis. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in physical sciences or equivalent

  • Theoretical background in physical science.

  • Experience working in a clean laboratory in relation to isotope geochemistry.

  • Ability to perform routine analysis of geochemical/isotopic samples.

  • Familiarity with Windows operating system and general PC experience including spreadsheet, database, and graphing techniques.

  • Proven ability to accurately and thoroughly complete multiple tasks simultaneously with conscious attention to detail.

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks meticulously.

  • Ability to follow safety and quality control procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
